"Moment, Design, Grace, Light, Color and Balance all come together in this winning photograph of a flying fish. I don't think I've ever seen one this beautifully done, congratulations. It's also somewhat of a quiet picture, a quality that I'm often drawn to and wish I had more of in my own work. It isn't just the monochromatic palette but the quality of light that provides such wonderful depth. A great many of the photographs that competed had 2 or 3 or 4 of these qualities and just shades of difference separated them from the winners. Thanks for sharing your …

"This photograph of a boarder under a wave immediately grabbed my attention. It has good action, strong color and light and an interesting composition organized on a diagonal that perfectly fits the square format of Instagram. I stared at this one a long time trying to figure out exactly what was happening with the wonderful reflection and light coming from the upper left hand side of the frame. Isn’t that what great photography is all about? Arresting images that force viewers to first stop and look and then evoke curiosity and emotion. This frame has it all." - Mike Yamashita …

“Wow! This image is captivating. California Dreaming? I can feel the sunshine and the wind blowing through my hair. Although the image seems simple, it has many layers. First, I see the young woman on her bike and then the palms. The texture of the tire tracks in the sand forms an elegant S shape, sweeping my eye through the frame and back to a wave in the distance that is almost blown out, but still keeps its form. In the last layer, the Santa Monica Mountains add the final touch. Forgive me if the photo was not taken in Southern …

“This image embodies the qualities of both a great photograph and a great instagram image. The formation of the people beautifully mimic the curve of the trees in the background and the curve of the hay mound. The light is gorgeous and the dramatic sky lends an eerie feeling.” - Ed Kashi

"The owl perched in the top of bare tree branches is subtle but the strength of the image grew on me. It is stark and yet rather startling although a tranquil mood. There is a freshness about the way the photographer captured this quiet and majestic moment in the natural world." -Melissa Farlow

“This image is technically well executed, using long exposure for the stars and the right light exposure to bring out the buildings. More importantly, this image captures a powerful sense of loneliness and solitude which define so much of remote landscapes small towns that are often affected by economic boom and bust cycles. Nice combination of beauty and storytelling.” - Pete McBride

“Why do certain images reach into us? Selecting a powerful image is so subjective. There are no formulas. We all see from who we are and regard others and moments from that same, often subconscious self. Of course the photograph has to be build of the right stuff—delicious light, a sense of design, a moment or relationship captured. But I was drawn to these hands because in this photo there is so much more. There are questions—is this a man or woman? Are their great, great grandchildren? What is the quality of love as they gather at the birthday party? Was the …

This image has power. It's dynamic. There are a lot of wave images out there, but this is a particularly beautiful one caught at the perfect moment, with great light, great lines and great composition. I also chose it because I imagine it was a difficult shot to get. Besides having to understand waves, needing a water housing and the fact that the lip of the wave is about to come down on the photographer, there was a lot that went into the making of the picture. I enjoy seeing images where I know there was a lot involved ...

“This photograph grabbed my attention because it is artfully done and then continues to work on another level showing us how insignificant we can be compared to the natural world. The photograph is a beautiful landscape with a perfect balance of light between the climber's headlamp and the late ambient light on the mountain.” - Randy Olson

“Emptiness and intimacy are two words that come to mind when I see the winning photograph. Why is that woman standing against the wall with her eyes closed? What are those men doing there? The bright white light makes it eerie. In this impersonal place with an impersonal light, there is an intimate moment. I think a good photograph raises questions, makes us imagine and wonder.”

"The winning photo has all the elements that make a powerful image: light, composition and moment. The light hitting the skateboarder highlights the peak moment of action and his arm position mirrors the lit raised arm of the spectator watching the action. Both the skateboarder and his enthusiastic friend are nicely positioned in front of simple dark backgrounds so they really stand out. The curved lines of the skateboard ramp compliment the strong curved lattice on the left to add symmetry to the composition."

“The winning image is one that snuck up on me. It is not an image that wows upon first viewing, but I love how it grows on you. There is a quiet quality to the image. I like the subtleties of the body language, the color palate and the emphasis on the blue sky. Both of the runners-up images are extremely graphic images. I especially like the broken shadow image. In the end, though, I am won over by the humanity of the two people on the hay bales. The winning image hints to a current trend in photography that …
