Joanna B. Pinneo is a freelance photographer whose work has taken her to 67 countries. From Tierra del Fuego to Grise Fiord in the Arctic Circle; she has covered immigration, global climate change, land disputes, ancient African trade routes, and the lives of native peoples around the world.
She received the Ted Scripps Environmental Journalism Fellowship from the University of Colorado in 2016, focusing on household air pollution’s impact on women and children in developing nations.
Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and awarded the LIFE Magazine Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Nature Photography, Joanna’s work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, Time, Geo, American Photographer, and numerous books. Her Grrlstories project earned her a Nikon Sabbatical Grant for amplifying girls’ voices through photography.
Her most recognized image of a child sleeping beside its mother in Mali appeared on the cover of National Geographic Magazine. It was also named one of the 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic, and was published in the book Women Photographers at National Geographic.
In 2021, Joanna joined Solar Sister (www.SolarSister.org) as Communications Manager, helping share the stories of women entrepreneurs bringing clean, affordable energy to communities across sub-Saharan Africa.
The talk will be followed with a Question-and-Answer session moderated by TPS Communications Director Alex Snyder. At the end of our presentation well be giving away a sign print by Joanna.
