Karla Gachet is an Ecuadorian visual storyteller who has documented the Latin American diaspora for nearly two decades, focusing on its culture, territory, migration, Indigenous and environmental rights, and the ties that bind communities across borders. A National Geographic Explorer and World Press Photo awardee, her work has been published internationally in National Geographic, The Smithsonian, The Washington Post, Geo France, and The Nature Conservancy, among others. In 2022, she received an Explorer grant to produce a collective project on the history and spread of Cumbia across Latin America. She is a photo editor, educator, and mentor, represented by Panos Pictures and based in Los Angeles.
In this talk, Karla will share the evolution of her photographic journey—from beginnings in Ecuador’s newsrooms to long-term, community-based projects across Latin America and the United States. Through personal stories, behind-the-scenes moments, and images from her current work on Cumbia and maternal health in Latin America, she’ll reflect on how photography has become a space for dialogue, reciprocity, and transformation. Karla will discuss moving beyond extractive narratives toward collaboration and trust, and how motherhood, migration, and mentorship continue to shape the way she sees, listens, and tell stories.
The talk will be followed with a Question-and-Answer session moderated by TPS Communications Director Alex Snyder. At the end of the talk, we’ll also be giving away a signed print by Karla.
